Network monitoring setup for UAE businesses: SolarWinds and custom dashboards
Monitoring means you find out a link or switch is down before your users call. I integrate network devices into SolarWinds over SNMP and syslog, and for smaller teams I build lightweight custom dashboards, like the device-monitoring tool I built at Forzateks.
Who this is for
- IT teams that hear about outages from users first
- Companies that own SolarWinds but never finished onboarding their devices
- Small businesses that need basic alerts without an enterprise tool
Problems it solves
- Outages discovered by phone call instead of an alert
- Devices added to the network but never to monitoring
- Alert noise so loud the team ignores it
- No history to show when a link started degrading
What you get
- SNMP and syslog configured on your network devices
- Devices and interfaces onboarded into SolarWinds
- Alert rules tuned to what actually needs action
- Dashboards for links, devices and sites
- Or a lightweight custom dashboard for smaller teams
How an engagement runs
- 1
Assess
Review what is running today: configs, links, sites and the problems you see.
- 2
Design
An HLD and LLD you sign off before anything changes.
- 3
Implement
Changes in planned windows, each with a rollback plan.
- 4
Hand over
Documentation, diagrams and a walkthrough for your team.
Relevant experience
- Integrated HPE Aruba devices into SolarWinds over SNMP and syslog
- Monitored SD-WAN performance and troubleshot routing and tunnel issues in Aruba Orchestrator
- Built a device-monitoring tool for Forzateks
Frequently asked questions
Should we use SNMP v2c or v3?
SNMPv3 wherever your devices support it, because it adds authentication and encryption. SNMP v2c sends its community string in plain text, so if a device only supports v2c, I limit it to a read-only string and restrict which hosts can query it.
Do we need a SolarWinds licence?
For SolarWinds, yes; it is commercial software. If that is more than you need, a lightweight custom dashboard covering device and link status is an option for smaller networks.
What gets monitored?
Typically device availability, interface status and utilisation, link latency and loss, and syslog events such as tunnel or routing changes. Alerts are tuned so the team only gets woken up for something that needs action.
Do you work outside Dubai?
Yes. I work on-site anywhere in the UAE and remotely across the GCC, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. My largest SD-WAN rollouts spanned all of those countries plus Jordan.
Ways to work together
- One-off assessment. An audit, survey or review with a written report and a prioritised plan.
- Project. Design and implementation with a fixed scope, dates and handover.
- Remote support retainer. Ongoing help for changes, troubleshooting and questions.
- On-site in the UAE. Surveys, cutovers and installs at your sites across the Emirates.
- Remote across the GCC. Design, configuration and support for sites in KSA, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.
